The Vedas are the earliest Hindu sacred texts originated in Ancient India, and were composed and performed orally for several centuries (generally believed to be from 1500 BC to 1200 BC). The name, “Veda" originated from the Sanskrit root "vid" meaning "to know" or “wisdom”. Hindu scriptures such as the Brahmanas and the Upanishads are commentaries on the Vedas.
